Using the Project Gantt Chart

Last updated: March 10, 2026

The Project Gantt Chart provides a visual timeline of all modules and tasks within a project. It allows teams to quickly understand how work is scheduled and adjust task timing directly from a visual timeline.

While the Task List View is best for managing and completing tasks, the Gantt Chart is designed for planning and adjusting project timelines.

Accessing the Gantt Chart

To open the Gantt chart:

  1. Navigate to a Project

  2. Select the Gantt tab at the top of the project

The Gantt chart will display all modules and tasks plotted along the project timeline based on their start and due dates.

Understanding the Gantt Layout

The Gantt chart is split into two main sections.

Left Panel — Project Structure

The left panel displays the structure of the project, including:

  • Modules

  • Tasks within each module

Modules can be expanded or collapsed to make it easier to focus on specific sections of the project.

Right Panel — Timeline

The right side displays a timeline showing when each task occurs.

Each task appears as a horizontal bar representing the time between its start and due date.

This makes it easy to see:

  • When tasks start and end

  • How long tasks are scheduled to take

  • Which tasks overlap

Adjusting Task Dates

One of the primary benefits of the Gantt chart is the ability to adjust task timing visually.

Moving Tasks

You can drag a task bar left or right to move the task earlier or later in the project timeline.

This updates the task’s start and due dates automatically.

Changing Task Duration

You can extend or shorten a task by dragging the left or right edge of the task bar.

This changes the time between the task’s start and due date.

Managing Task Dependencies

The Gantt chart also shows task dependencies, which represent tasks that must be completed before another task can begin.

Dependencies appear as connecting lines between tasks.

If the option Move dependent tasks as a group is enabled, adjusting one task will automatically shift its dependent tasks accordingly.

This helps maintain correct sequencing when project timelines change.

Adding Modules and Tasks

You can add modules and tasks directly from the Gantt view.

Adding Modules

Click the + icon next to the project name to add a new module.

You can choose:

  • New Module

  • Module From Library

Adding Tasks

Click the + icon next to a module to add tasks.

You can choose:

  • New Task

  • Task From Library

This allows teams to quickly expand the project plan without leaving the Gantt view.

Managing Columns

The project task table can be customized to display additional information.

Click the + button at the top of the task list to manage visible columns.

You can show or hide fields such as:

  • Assignee

  • Start Date

  • Due Date

  • Status

  • Progress

  • Dependencies

  • Subtasks

  • Visibility

This allows teams to tailor the view to display the information most relevant to their workflow.

Date Limit Options

The Date Limits setting controls how task dates behave when being adjusted on the timeline.

Options may include:

  • Unrestricted — tasks can be moved freely on the timeline

  • Start Date — adjustments respect the task start date

  • End Date — adjustments respect the task due date

These settings help prevent unintended timeline changes when adjusting tasks.

Why Teams Use the Gantt Chart

The Gantt chart provides a powerful visual way to manage project schedules.

Teams commonly use it to:

  • Adjust timelines when projects shift

  • Plan upcoming onboarding phases

  • Identify scheduling conflicts

  • Manage task dependencies

  • Understand project duration

Because tasks can be adjusted directly on the timeline, schedule updates can be made much faster than editing tasks individually.

Best Practices

Use the Gantt chart when adjusting multiple task dates
Keep start and due dates updated so the timeline remains accurate
Use dependencies to ensure tasks occur in the correct order
Expand or collapse modules to focus on specific project phases

Maintaining accurate task dates ensures the Gantt chart remains a reliable planning tool.
