Task not showing up when creating automation
Last updated: April 2, 2026
If a task isn't appearing in the dropdown when you're trying to create a "When task completed" automation, the most common reason is that you've already created an automation for that specific task.
Check for existing automations
Each task can only have one automation trigger. If you've already created an automation for a task, it won't appear in the dropdown when creating a new automation.
To check if an automation already exists:
Look through your existing list of automations
Find the automation that uses your task as a trigger
Click into that existing automation to add additional actions
Other troubleshooting steps
If you don't see an existing automation for your task, verify:
Location: Confirm you're building the automation in the right place - either in the Playbook (Library → Playbooks → Automations) or within a specific Project (Project → Automations)
Task exists: Make sure the task actually exists in the Playbook or Project you're working in
Task type: Check whether it's a regular task vs. sub-task, and if it's part of a module or checklist
You can also try creating the automation from the other location (Playbook vs. Project) to see if the task appears there.
